Getting Creative in the Kitchen

Who doesn't know how to boil water?  Right?  I am sure there are some people that don't, but for the majority of us dinner time is an issue more because of the lack of creative ideas than because of the lack of know how.  Here I hope to inspire people to look at food in a new way.  Dinnertime is a chance to experiment, play around with food, and just have fun with it.  As a mom, I can easily see the impact on kids.  We all want our kids to develop healthy eating habits, but we often fight with those picky eaters and all of the sudden dinner has become a battle.  If we involve our kids in the cooking process, we will find that they are much more ready to try new things.  Even if they don't like it at first, that's okay.  They will hopefully get another chance to try the same foods prepared in a different way at some point.  Eventually they will learn to love trying new foods and experimenting with you!

So, let's put away all those recipe books that we feel we are tied to and get creative.  Take your favorite meal and prepare it tonight.  This time though, take out two of the ingredients and substitute them with two other things.  See what happens and make a game out of it.  During dinner, ask your family if they can figure out what is different and you might find that they have some great ideas for you.  Remember that right now is a great time to hide some extra garden veggies in your meals so try to make one of the substitutions an extra veggie.  Good eating!!
